Talk your way to a Happy Relationship

Written by Dinika Anand

When it comes to relationships and marriage, everyone has an opinion on what makes a perfect relationship. We get to hear a lot of diverse opinions about that one special ingredient which can make or break a relationship. Some people talk about how trust matters the most, while others value understanding or mutual respect and some, who say love is the buzz word. However, the key to a successful relationship is effective communication. The fast paced, technology driven world of today is a minefield of poor interpersonal communication due to the sheer amount of information that we experience at any given moment- our smartphones are akin to Pandora’s box with all the applications and notifications. It is easy to lose track and not communicate with each other as we get pressurized and challenged due to work, children or some other demands.

Often, couples who face issues in their relationships complain about the lack of attention, understanding and acceptance from their partner. All these problems are rooted in poor communication and the resulting lack of understanding and connection. As individuals, we all want our partner to be our best friend, advisor, confidant and support system but do we really know how to be that person first?

Here are the golden rules of communication to keep your relationship healthy:

- Listening over hearing

Don’t let your prejudices and ideas colour your understanding of what your partner says.

- Sharing over speaking

Let your partner know your needs and feelings clearly and don’t be ambiguous or vague. Your partner is not a mind reader and clarity always leads to positive gains.

- Conversations over decisions

As partners it is important that you both talk about your likes, dislikes and personal experiences at least as much if not more than the amount of energy devoted to lunch table talk!

- We before me

Your partner is on your side always- refrain from ‘I’ phrases

- Discuss and not debate

Be open to their perspective as well; don’t turn an argument into a debate.

- Be honest and open

Your partner is your 24X7, 365 day companion, hiding anything from them is creating room for mistrust, misunderstanding and hurt feelings.

- It’s not a battle

Couples often forget that even in their worst fights- they are still two people who love each other and care for each other.

In a way, what is crucial is not just listening to the other person but also we share and talk to them. A good relationship is about attending to the other person fully and what better way to show our love than to attend to them fully minus the distractions of our hyper-connected world! If you feel that your relationship is suffering because of a lack of effective communication, then reach out. Poor communication amongst couples is the first red flag ignoring which can set your relationship on a downward spiral.

Don’t let your relationship suffer but seek the help of a professional and keep the spark alive always!
