Smart Parenting

Am I well prepared?

Have I learned how to walk balance work and being a parent?

Have I learned when to indulge and pamper?

And when to stick to a ‘No’?

Have I learned not to be paranoid but still watchful?

Am I being the best parent I can be?

Is my child happy and healthy?

These are the questions parents of young children find themselves asking. In fact, most of these doubts continue till well after the child has crossed into adolescence and is a young adult. As they say, you’re a parent for life. A parent can think of their role as that of a potter shaping their own uniquely beautiful pot. Your preparedness decides how this clay is shaped. You can delegate and take support, but the final call will always be yours

But’s it’s important to look at the other aspect of it as well. While parenting is a challenging process, the rewards are plenty too. Almost all the parents I have interacted with to date have told me that nothing compares to the experience of holding their child in their arms or that a smile on their child’s face is all that is needed to make their day. But parents are often so concentrated on caring and providing for their children that they forget that they need to take care of themselves and sometimes need help.

Bringing up an infant or toddler is a period of life when time is short and the demands are many. Parents often feel like elastic bands, stretched to the fullest, sometimes ready to snap. Parents play multiple roles, switching from executive to apron, coach to dishwasher, and friendly parent to tough parent. Multitasking becomes the rule, not the exception. Planning, prioritizing and time management become life mantras. So remember, happy families don’t happen by accident. They are born of intentional parenting.

As a clinical psychologist and wellness specialist, I provide therapy and counselling to parents. I help them be smart parents to their children and also understand their roles in their children’s lives and what it means to them to be a parent.
