Improving job concentration in easy steps!

Surveys show that some people check their emails over a whopping 30 times per hour, a figure so mind-boggling one questions how they get any work done at all. The Internet and smartphone technology make it a whole lot harder for workers to concentrate on the tasks at hand—from emails to social media and addictive games like Angry Birds—a lot of time that could have been used for productive activities is being wasted doing things that are, well, unproductive. Add other factors like home issues and a talkative desk-mates to the mix and we have virtually an entire workday wasted doing nothing of use.

Here are a few tips to help you focus at work and increase productivity.

Plan Your Day

Going into a day without a plan is the first step towards being unproductive. Before leaving for work, set time out to create a rough outline of how you want your day to go. Doing this serves to set short-term goals that you will work towards during the day.

Tidy Up

Some people can get away with having messy desks, but odds are, you aren’t one of them. Before starting work, ensure that your desk and the immediate surroundings are tidy. This helps maximize focus as having so many objects around inevitably divides attention.

Take Breaks Regularly

Studies have shown that the average human is unable to sustain attention on a particular event for more than twenty minutes, so trying to focus on a task for long periods of time may prove to be counterproductive. Take short breaks regularly to stretch and relax your mind before getting back to the task at hand.

Don’t Check That Email

Seriously, it can wait. Checking your personal email may take anything from less than a minute to a couple of minutes. Just a moment, you say, until you realize that you check it every ten minutes, effectively cutting down your work time by anything between 1020%. For an activity with so little use, it’s almost amusing how many people make it such a staple in their schedules. Make time out to check your email in the morning before leaving for work, during your work break and when you get back home. No on sends urgent information by mail anyway.

Keep Off Social Media

Social media is fun, we all know that. You should perhaps leave your surfing of Instagram and Twitter to places other than your office, though, as not only is it unprofessional, you probably don’t want to end up being that guy who plays around while others are hard at work.
