Depression Is Not a Stigma: 5 Famous People Who Spoke Up About It

1 in 10 people in India suffer from some degree of depression.
It does not help that the Indian society at large still sees depression as a stigma. It is quickly equaled to an untreatable manic disorder that has to be brushed under the carpet. The fact that signs of depression can often be more subtle than you think does not help matters much. Uncontrollable crying or constant sadness aren’t the only signs of the mental disease.

Perpetual irritability, unexplained nastiness or sudden self-harming behaviour can signal depression of some degree. Other times, symptoms can be physiological too, such as unexplained weight loss, hair loss and lack of appetite.

Things are changing though as much in India as they are worldwide. People are beginning to become more sensitised to mental health issues. They are beginning to understand that someone just can’t ‘snap out of it’. Celebrities who have been vocal about their depression and related mental health issues have played an important role in raising awareness about the issue.

Celebs that have helped the cause

Deepika Padukone

In 2015, the Bollywood actress bared all in a television interview, wherein she admitted to have battled depression the preceding year. ‘My breath was shallow, I suffered from lack of concentration and I broke down often’, she said about her depressive phase. After consultation with a couple of psychiatrists, she took medication for her condition, took a break from work and spent time with her family until she felt physically and mentally better.

Kid Cudi

In an open letter this past week, the rapper has admitted that he has been battling depression and suicidal thoughts for a long time. The American rapper of The Prayer fame has admitted to checking himself into a rehab to fix his health.

Bruce Springsteen

The rockstar admitted in a 2012 article that he battled depression in the 1980s. In fact, according to the Rolling Stone magazine, there has been a relapse, and Springsteen has been quietly battling depression with medication recently. According to The New Yorker, depression runs in Springsteen’s family.

Wayne Brady

The actor of Whose Line Is It Anyway fame admitted in 2014 that he battled depression for several years, before finally taking medication at the age of 42. ‘Nobody wants to out themselves so to speak’, he said an interview to Entertainment Tonight, referring to the stigma that surrounds the disease.

Demi Lavato

In a 2015 interview, the singer admitted that it took her several years to figure out why she felt sad and unhappy despite everything going fantastically in her life. ‘Mental illnesses aren't looked at like physical illnesses. If we don't treat this like a physical illness, problems aren't going to be solved’, she said in the interview.
