5 Discipline Issues Every Parent Faces and How To Solve Them

Even though being a parent can be rewarding, it definitely comes with its challenges. Every time you have to discipline your child, you face a unique set of problems. And it is essential to do so because what children learn or don’t learn when they are young influences their behaviour in society.

Physical Aggression

If your child uses physical aggression to solve a problem, it may be time to look at how you respond to their behaviour. At times, it may come too naturally to shout or respond aggressively yourself.

If your child lashes out, it may be due to a specific sensitive point. Find the trigger. Coach your child and speak to them in a calm voice. Yelling will most likely worsen the behaviour and make them think it’s okay to react like that.

Encourage physical exercise. Whether it is bike riding for a younger child or running for a tween, a moderate amount of safe physical exercise does nothing but good!

Teaching A Child Right from Wrong

Moulding your kid to be a good person is always the foremost objective. New parents can quickly learn that what they teach (or don’t teach) their children are the tools that they will use to make decisions in life.

Teach a child the value of respect, not only for others, but also for themselves.

Learning humility is important. A person who shows humility shows strength.

Lead by example. This is called integrity.

Teaching Your Child Consequences

Every child needs to learn the natural consequences of their actions. By the time they reach the age of 5, they should understand what constitutes ‘bad’ behaviour. You can teach a young child by saying ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to reward or discourage behaviour. Below are some tips to help your child understand consequences:

Reward honesty, by praising your child when they tell the truth.

Enforce your rules. If you let your child slack, they will feel like they ‘got away with it’, when all they got away with was the start of a bad habit. If your child breaks the rules, enforce the punishment.

Lying

A little white lie can’t hurt anybody, right? Wrong. Teaching kids at an early age that lies can lead to uncomfortable consequences is very important.

Sometimes children lie to get attention. Make them understand how wrong this is.

Show your children that you are emotionally strong by telling the truth. It will not only teach them right from wrong but also make you feel better.

Defiance

Defiance can be the most trying for a parent. Having your child disrespect you in public, throw tantrums or outright challenge your authority is frustrating and hard to deal with. Both toddlers and tweens are known for their tendency to misbehave. Try the following tips:

Praise your child's good behaviour.

Spend as much time with them as you can, giving them the attention they need.

When necessary, give them a warning, followed by a consequence.

At times, even though you do your best, the results may be lacking. In such cases, seeking the help of a therapist is the best option. A psychologist can help solve issues between you and your children and help you work together.
